170 years of worship at the site of St Paul’s Bakery Hill.

In 1854 Bishop Charles Perry, the first Bishop of Melbourne, appointed the a young ordained minister from the United Kingdom, as the first full time incumbent for the Church of England in Ballarat. He arrived in July of that year and immediately set about organising church communities in Balllarat, Creswick and elsewhere. He celebrated worship in Lydiard Street, and in Bakery Hill.

James Thackeray invited Archdeacon Stretch to come to Ballarat and lay the foundation stone for the Cathedral and by the end of the year he was organising the people of Ballarat East to build  a place of worship . This Church, St Paul’s, was a temporary building constructed of wood and canvas. It was completed in March 1855.
