Sr Elisa Helen CSC short Biography

I was born in Armidale NSW in 1956. At the time, my father was working as a field researcher with CSIRO and I had 2 older sisters Rosemary and Margaret. My brother Peter was born 13months after me and so we were very close when growing up. A few years later my dad was ordained in the Armidale Diocese. My younger brother Tim was born after that. Dad’s ministry led to our family to live in several different places in both NSW and South Australia. I went to 6 different schools. My father died in 1978 in Adelaide. And my eldest sister Rose died from breast cancer in 2012.

When I left school, I trained as a registered nurse at Calvary Hospital. I always had a faith of sorts, but between leaving school and beginning my nursing training I had an intense conversion experience which led me ultimately to join the Sisters of the Church in 1985. I lived with the Sisters in Kempsey NSW; then in Glebe in Sydney, and then in East Burwood in Melbourne until 2000. During that period i served God and the community through working in the Sisters houses. I made my life profession as a Sister in 1996 in Glebe.

My mum [Hilary] and my sister Margaret and her family are all living in Ballarat now, and worshipping at St Matthew’s Wendouree.

The call to professional ministry was an itch which grew alongside of my religious vocation and I was eventually ordained in Melbourne Diocese in 2003. This felt like a coming home for me. I have served as assistant curate at St Andrew’s Brighton, and the Bellarine Gateway Anglican Church. I have been Vicar at St Matthew’s Ashburton and I have just completed 10 years as the Vicar of Christ Church Melton.

Currently I am the Sister in Charge of the Australian Province of CSC [titled the ‘Provincial’]. As our numbers are small, I have plenty of time for ministry, but have chosen a 75% appointment to reserve some time for the Sisters.

When I am relaxing, I love a good movie, or a book. I am also a great fan of the Sydney Swans AFL. And I a enjoy a good walk and try to walk each day with my Australian Terrier Sally.

I am delighted to be called to serve our Lord and St Paul’s and I am truly looking forward to meeting you all in a couple of months,

Every blessing

Alertness vs. Unawareness

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mark 14:38)

This means being aware of that which is taking place around me so I can have the right response to it.
