From an inspection on Monday 6th May, the Wetlands Reserve is looking superb, other than for plenty of litter at the car park (only location where there was litter); the surrounding woodland has grown appreciably to complement the wetland and disguise the eroded character of the neighbouring sloping ground, whilst the understorey of Chinese Scrub and other indigenous shrubs is providing good habitat for birds – the number of Blue Wrens was notable. The Wetland itself is looking excellent; there’s a good cover of phragmites (native reed), no woody weeds and good sounds of frogs.
Our small planting site is doing rather well, on the whole, despite the dry conditions: more than 80 plants are surviving, with many growing well an many having flowered or still flowering.
So, time for a maintenance activity (as a lead up to a planting activity in Sept/Oct) & a bit of stroll around this quite beautiful spot. Please bring basic gardening hand tools & lots of garbage bags! Work will include preparing sites for the new plants, some weeding around existing plantings and even burning some indigenous grass tussocks (to assist their regeneration), as well as picking up the litter.
We’ll meet at the car park off Ainley St, Nerrina (close to the intersection with Hillcrest Rd).
Enquiries: me – eh, sorry, that’s Hedley.
